Alison plays for Choral Evensong featuring the St. James Choir, under the direction of Alex Benestelli

Sung by the 12-voice Schola Cantorum of St. James by-the-Sea, Choral Evensong in an Anglican tradition is a magnificent act of choral worship.

Drawn almost entirely from the Bible, its purpose is to proclaim the wonderful works of God and evoke from the worshiper a response of praise, penitence, and prayer.

In the beautiful setting of St. James Church, there is no better place to spend 40 minutes surrounded by God's presence in the beauty of sacred music.

Evensong is described as a time to be still and let God speak to us through the singing of psalms, readings and canticles.

The service is at:

From J.S. Bach’s intimate portrayal of a man’s sublime resignation and yearning to Messiaen’s achingly beautiful movement from his Quartet For the End of Time, Songs of Heaven and Earth offers the distinctively unique ideas of three brilliant composers’ perceptions of heavenly voices.

The program closes with soprano Susanna Phillips, whose voice The New York Times describes as “warm and shimmering,” singing “Das himmlische Leben” in Mahler’s sunniest and most intimate symphony presenting a child’s vision of the heavens.

This version of Mahler's 4th symphony was orchestrated by Arnold Schoenberg.

Carlsbad, CA 92011

In A Whole New Mind, Daniel Pink explores the six senses of the creative mind. One of those senses, Symphony, explores the relationship between relationships, and being able to see the big picture. Audiences will enjoy a performance from musicians who have performed all over the world from the San Diego Baroque Soloists, and learn how musicians can exemplify Symphony through understanding how the individual instruments contribute to the performance as a whole.

Admission is free. Seating is first come, first served. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. This event is a part of the 2018 Carlsbad Reads Together.
